The 5 inch Doodle Bug is our smallest surface popper and weighs in at 65g, making it ideal for short to medium range work. The design is completely different to most standard popper shapes and came about almost by accident when a much larger lure that one of our consultants was testing got chopped in half by a large Baracuda!
As it was one of the only lures he had he continued to fish with half a lure and found it actually produced a totally unique action and a great response – and so the Doodle Bug was born! Since then we have refined the shape and it has become a favourite with our consultants and skippers.
Although it can be used in virtually any conditions we have found the Doodle Bug particularly effective when fishing around shallower marks that are strewn with rocks and boulders. It works best when retrieved at a fast but erratic pace, bouncing momentarily out of the water.
The Doodle Bug has been fitted with a pair of 2/0 XXX treble hooks which have been chemically sharpened and really are the strongest available. To ensure a secure fitting, we have selected to use top quality XXX three turn split rings.
The Doodle Bug is available in REDHEAD, PILCHARD and GREEN MACKEREL
Fox Bellyeye LuresThrough our extensive field testing we came to realise that a third eye on the belly not only dramatically increases the strike rate, but more importantly, the hook-up ratio; hence we have used our unique ‘Bellyeyes’ on our range of poppers.
It has long been realised that a baitfish eye is the target for any predator to home in on and this is one of the main reasons why we always experience missed takes and poor hook-ups on so many lures and when you look at the position of the eyes in relation to the hooks fitted, it is little wonder!
When we started to experiment with a third eye positioned in various places on the body we soon began to understand how important it was to have a close relationship with this third strike eye and the hooks – and so the Bellyeye was born!
For surface lure fishing, the third Bellyeye is even more important and when viewed from beneath the waves a surface retrieve popper with such a prominent third eye really stimulates takes. During our field testing, we experienced up to a four to one strike rate in favour of the Bellyeyes when fished against the same lure without the third eye fitted.
Rather than a huge range, we have selected just three patterns and three colour variants within each pattern. All of the lures have been made from seasoned hardwood sprayed with authentic Japanese high quality paint and finished with a tough epoxy resin.
